With much of the Bay Area and California due for a weekend heat wave, the state’s power grid regulator is asking residents to conserve energy on Friday.

Cal ISO on Thursday issued a Flex Alert for Friday from 4 p.m. to 9, calling on residents to turn off unnecessary lights, avoid using major appliances and set their thermostats to no cooler than 78 degrees as health allows.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for much of the Bay Area on Thursday, updating their guidance to include a heat advisory in the Santa Clara Valley. The agency’s guidance runs from noon Friday until 11 p.m. Sunday.

Across the region, temperatures will range from the mid-90s to the low 100s. In the hottest parts of the Bay Area, temperatures are expected to reach as high as 110 degrees.

When the state experienced a significant heat wave last month, Cal Iso issued a second Flex Alert a day after the first. The second alert lasted from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
