The company behind what Marin County health officials said was an unauthorized COVID-19 testing site is under state investigation for concerns raised in Los Angeles and San Diego counties.
Officials shut down a testing site operated by Community Wellness America in Fairfax on Monday, Marin County health officer Dr. Matthew Willis told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Health officials said the police asked the company to move because they did not have permission to use the sidewalk across the street from a health food store. The site was then moved to a nearby residential driveway, where it was ultimately shut down.
"They were not able to provide a license in Fairfax to conduct business at a private residence," Willis told the paper.
Steve Sterling, the company's CEO, said Community Wellness America had an application for a business license in Fairfax.
He told the outlet he wasn't aware of the county's allegations, and he wanted to reach out to health officials to understand the situation.
The California Department of Public Health confirmed to the paper that the company was under investigation, but provided no further comment.
Willis told the outlet Community Wellness America used a state-certified lab to process tests, and the company has been updating its results in the state database.
