A San Francisco landmark is open once again, more than a year after the pandemic shut it down along with the rest of the city.
Now, visitors are returning to the famed Coit Tower as it reopened on Thursday. Tourists and local residents alike are all excited for the tower’s return from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Last time I visited was maybe a year ago, before COVID actually hit," said San Francisco resident David Harbin. "But it’s really cool to see people coming back and being able to experience this big tourist attraction."
Jo Hamilton came from San Diego, and decided to take the Filbert Steps up to the Tower, which did present a bit of a challenge on the warmer-than-normal day. "I stopped many times to enjoy the view," Hamilton said.
Tour director Davy Jones got the official word that he could reopen just hours before he did.
"We’re all wandering around trying to see ‘Okay, now what?’" Jones said, as he discussed the challenges it has posed on the staff. "Things like filling toilet paper rolls, and ‘where’s the key to this, where’s the key to that?’"
Masks will be required in the lobby and the elevator up to the observation deck. At this point, only four people are allowed in the elevator at a time.
