Cars are starting to back up earlier on local freeways such as I-580, which runs from San Rafael to the East Bay, as traffic levels have climbed to pre-COVID-19 levels.

"Most of the toll bridges are running at 90% or more of pre-pandemic traffic levels. Of course, the 880 corridor has never been a picnic," John Goodwin with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission told KCBS Radio.

Commuters on the road Wednesday morning confirmed it's been bumper to bumper traffic for longer periods of time. One woman told KCBS Radio her coworkers have been struggling with the backup. "It adds at least an hour to their commute for those going to Tracy or Brightwood, so more time away from their families," she said.

Adding insult to injury, tolls for bridges and express lanes have increased over the past year, as well as the prolonged issue of high gas prices.

"We've got to pay for everything," one Bay Area resident protested. "I'm old, T.V. used to be free."
