West Contra Costa Unified School District is contemplating a vaccine mandate for its students.
The superintendent of the district has contacted Culver City Unified in Southern California, another district that already announced a vaccine mandate for its eligible students, according to reporting by KNTV.
Superintendent Chris Hurst is seeking to learn more about what the experience looked like for Culver City. Others are on board with the idea. Trustees and teachers expressed interest in mandating vaccinations for all eligible students, ages 12 and up, at last week’s school board meeting.
According to the district, 93% of teachers are already vaccinated.
Of the almost 30,000 students enrolled in K-12 in West Contra Costa, only 14 students and four staff have tested positive for COVID-19.
However, just south in the Fremont Unified School District, 33 students, teachers and staff have contracted the virus, mostly due to off-campus exposure, and 95% of teachers are vaccinated.
Fremont has about 33,000 students and just over 4,700 teachers and staff, making the case rate just a tenth of a percent.
