While most county clerk offices were closed around the Bay Area Sunday, the Contra Costa County office made room for some lucky couples to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day.

Twenty-one couples scheduled a Valentine’s Day ceremony this year.

“I couldn’t spend it with anybody, wouldn’t want to spend it with anyone except my fiancé… wife!” said Groom Andrew Murphy. “It’s been 5 minutes and I already forgot. And she reminded me I can never forget this anniversary because then I’d be in double trouble.”

Dawn Kruger with the Clerk Recorder’s office said, normally, they would rent out an event space like the John Muir house, but this year, they had to make do with the lobby of their Martinez office – with no one but the couple allowed inside.

“There is a glass between our staff and each of the couples that come in,” she said. “We are definitely making sure we sanitize everything.”

It’s not exactly what they were expecting on their wedding day, said Murphy, but the coronavirus pandemic can’t dampen their spirits.

“I’m super ecstatic, even during the pandemic,” he said. “It’s raining now, but nothing can take the smile off my face.”
