Tuesday marked the first day of COVID-19 vaccination clinics on school campuses in Contra Costa County.
Contra Costa County Health Services, the Office of Education and Kaiser Permanente are working together to offer free mobile vaccine clinics to more than two dozen school campuses over the next two months. No appointment is needed.
The goal is to help students receive access to free vaccines before returning to class in the fall.
A small number of students received their first dose at Antioch Middle School and said it was painless.
“I had to ask if they even injected the shot,” one newly vaccinated student told KCBS Radio.
Anyone is eligible for the vaccine, including students from other schools, family and community members.
“We have to do more to get Latina and low income youth access to vaccines and schools,” an Antioch Middle School student said.
Clinics will rotate to new campuses weekly, later returning to provide second-doses. Now that the county has opened up eligibility to residents 12 and older, young teens said the wait was worth it to not only protect themselves, but also their loved ones.
“I only got vaccinated to help my family, myself and my friends,” one student who was inoculated Tuesday explained.
Clinics are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Antioch Middle and Concord High schools through May 22nd and on select days after that through July 10th.
