Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Steve Hill told KCBS Radio on Thursday that hazmat crews quickly decontaminated a woman on the 100 block of Mococo Road in Martinez on Thursday after receiving a call for a "lab individual exposed to cyanide."

Hill said Contra Costa County fire crews arrived on the scene at about 11:38 a.m., about three minutes after they were called. There, they found a woman who was "alert" but had difficulty breathing.

First responders found a spill had occurred in a laboratory's chemical hood, but Hill said they weren't able to verify whether the spilled chemical was cyanide. The woman, who was the only person in the laboratory exposed to the chemical, was evacuated from the room and then decontaminated before she was transported to a nearby hospital at 12:14 p.m.

Hill didn't specify where the spill occurred beyond the city block. The manager of a chemical plant located on the 100 block of Mococo Road didn't respond to KCBS Radio's voicemail requesting comment prior to publication on Thursday afternoon.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District didn't have an update on the woman's condition after she arrived at the hospital.
