Another new coronavirus variant, this one first detected in India, has now surfaced in the Bay Area.
One case of the Indian coronavirus variant has been detected by Stanford’s Clinical Virology Lab, with seven cases still pending confirmation. It’s being called a double-mutant because of two mutations making it that much more serious.
Vaccines are still considered the best weapon to fight the new variant.
Health official Dr. Marty Fenstersheib said one in five Santa Clara County residents are totally done with the series of vaccines.
“We really need to get people vaccinated,” he told KCBS Radio. “We know there is a limiting factor of how many vaccines we have.”
Earlier this week, Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody said it’s a race between vaccines and the virus.
“Given that these variants are spreading, we really want to do everything we can to keep them from spreading, and if everyone continues to wear their mask that will really help these variants from getting a foothold,” she said.
Officials at Stanford have not released the locations of this newest strain.
