On Friday, Santa Clara County's Public Health Department reported a large outbreak of COVID-19 among coaches and players in a local youth basketball program.
County officials said they identified 77 positive cases associated with the outbreak. That includes 39 youth players, three coaches and 35 other contacts.
Seventeen additional cases in other counties have been linked to the program, as well.
Officials learned that players from affected teams traveled from the Bay Area to participate in a youth basketball tournament in Placer County in November, in violation of health orders.
The county said the private basketball program for middle school and high school aged players was violating local and state orders for youth sports in effect at the time the outbreak began.
The program has been cited by county officials.
An investigation is ongoing.
