Heaps was a reporter and writer for the news station for nearly 30 years after starting in the 1980s and retiring in 2014, the station reported.

According to his family, he died peacefully surrounded by people he loved, including his wife of 41 years.

"We are grieving heavily, painfully, and together as a family," Heaps' wife Patti told the station.

To honor Heaps, the family hopes people will donate to Guide Dogs for the Blind Inc., a nonprofit based in San Rafael where Heaps' dog Chase worked as a guide.
