Several lanes on the lower deck were blocked following the incident, leading to traffic gridlock leaving San Francisco onto the Bay Bridge.

The California Highway Patrol said the two-vehicle crash happened at about 11:40 a.m. on I-80 eastbound just before the Treasure Island off-ramp. One of the drivers got out, brandished a firearm and carjacked another driver who was passing by the crash scene.

He sped off eastbound "into the Oakland area," officials added.

Authorities said they're looking for a white Chevy Colorado pickup truck with California license plate number 95222P2.

The suspect – described "as a possible Caucasian or Hispanic male" in his mid-30s – is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him or the vehicle is asked to call 911 and not attempt to engage the suspect.

At one point, traffic was backed up into San Francisco as far as Cesar Chavez Street on northbound Highway 101.

All impacted lanes have since reopened. No one was hurt.

Scheduled Caltrans road work in the lower deck's left lane is expected to wrap up by 3 p.m. Wednesday.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
