Fire crews are nearing containment on a vegetation fire burning along the shoreline near San Quentin in San Rafael on Monday night.

Smoke can be seen coming from the area.


San Rafael Fire Department Battalion Chief Matt Windrem told KCBS Radio that the fire is five acres and not threatening any structures. He said that the fire should be totally contained shortly.

Highway Patrol told KPIX-5 that they aren't planning on closing I-580 and no evacuations are planned.

Fire officials are asking people to avoid the area.

The San Rafael Fire Department first tweeted that they were responding to the grass fire at 6 p.m. Monday before announcing they had nearly contained it at 7:03 p.m.

Officials noted that that the blaze serves as a reminder that it is currently fire season in the Bay Area.

The National Weather Service issued the first Red Flag Fire Warning of the season Friday and extended it through Tuesday at 6 p.m.
