Home surveillance footage of the attack showed another man running up to the 84-year-old man and kicking him from behind as he was doing yard work at around 6 p.m. on March 25.
"As far as he knows, this was completely unprovoked, random," Daly City Police Sgt. Brandon Scholes said of the victim during a phone interview with KCBS Radio on Wednesday.
Daly City police didn’t identify the victim, who is recovering from minor injuries he sustained to his arm.
Scholes said the victim's family told police that this is the second time the 84-year-old has been attacked in his yard. They didn't report the previous attack last February, he said.
The family is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, as police seek to learn more information about the attacker.
Police said the suspect is balding, standing 5-foot-10 and weighing about 220 pounds. They believe he is between 30 and 50 years old, but they are still unsure what prompted the attack.

Scholes said the department wants to view additional nearby surveillance footage from that night.
"Our suspect obviously came from somewhere, and went somewhere after the fact," Scholes said. "And we'd like to find out where that is."
