You might've missed the latest adventures of Marvel's shrinking superheroes filming in San Francisco over the weekend, and not because of their small stature.
Marvel Studios' "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" very quietly completed a two-day shoot in the city last weekend, a Film SF official confirmed to KCBS Radio.
A permit application submitted by the production listed San Francisco's Central Police Station as the primary filming location, with external shots of the building and downtown gathered Saturday. The production then filmed "plate shots" – or, background shots with no subjects in the foreground – of the station lobby and scenic shots of the city on Sunday, according to the application.
Stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Michele Pfeiffer were listed as "not present but in scenes" on the application.
A filming notice distributed to the neighbors prior to the weekend said "PYM Productions" would film "the interior and exterior of a business" on Vallejo St. – where Central Station is located – and city police were on site to assist with "intermittent traffic control."
The name "Pym" should ring a bell to Marvel fans, as it’s the last name of Douglas’ character, Hank. In the films, Hank Pym is the inventor of the "Pym particles" which allow Ant-Man and the Wasp to shrink – or grow – to various sizes.
During a June 15 meeting, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution allowing for the film’s production to use the San Francisco Police Department insignia. A draft use agreement dated to June 8 listed June 19 and June 20 as the production dates in the city.
The production company applying to use the insignia? "PYM Particles Productions III, LLC," referencing Pym and the third "Ant-Man" film. Marvel Studios was not listed on the application.
Rudd's Scott Lang and Evangeline Lily's Hope van Dyne are the civilian identities of the eponymous heroes, both of whom reside in San Francisco. Pfeiffer and Douglas play Lily's parents.
Each of the first two “Ant-Man” films took place in the city by the Bay, with at least part of the production occurring in San Francisco.
Much of it was filmed at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios. Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List confirmed production on the third “Ant-Man” film will take place in Atlanta and London. Rudd revealed earlier this month that production had begun in the U.K.
The plot of “Quantumania,” which is set for release on Feb. 17, 2023, is largely under wraps. Deadline reported last September that Jonathan Majors, star of 2019’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” will play the time-traveling Kang the Conqueror. Eagle-eyed Marvel fans believe the Disney+ show “Loki” is teasing the villain’s introduction, though Majors has denied he will appear in the series.
