A San Mateo County author is working to spread good news following a year of uncertainty.

Hal Urban, an 80-year-old author and former teacher at San Carlos and Woodside High Schools and the University of San Francisco, has become known to his students as the “Good News Guy.”

“They couldn’t find good news in the newspaper so I said why don’t you tell me about some good news locally, tell me some good news about your family, you, your school or your community,” Urban said. “All of a sudden the kids started sharing these incredible things that were happening to them.”

In his new book titled “The Power of Good News”, Urban talks about the impact of positivity and ways people can incorporate more uplifting news into their lives.

“Attitude, being thankful and being with positive people helps a lot. There are a number of things we can do to increase our awareness of the good in our lives,” he said.

Being mindful of current events, choosing to seek out the good in situations and spreading that positivity to others — just a few things he says can instantly improve one’s mental health.

“Your happy hormones really kick in when we do positive things and receive positive information,” he said.

Urban has made it his life’s purpose to help those less fortunate than himself, which is why he is donating all the money made from his book sales to charities in need.

“Charities that are really devoted to help people who are struggling financially and people who are handicapped, that’s where all the money going to go,” Urban said.

The Power of Good News is now on sale at halurban.com and on Amazon.
