Mia Bonta leads with nearly 55% of the vote in the special election to fill her husband's former seat in the California State Assembly.
Bonta, the Alameda Unified School District's president, led social justice attorney Janani Ramachandran by 4,609 votes as of Tuesday night, according to Alameda County election results. The Democratic pair ran to represent California's 18th Assembly District after Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed former Assemblymember Rob Bonta as Attorney General in April.
Mia is Rob’s wife, and she had 25,712 votes to Ramachandran’s 21,103 by 11:01 p.m. on Tuesday night. Alameda County Registrar of Voters Tim Dupuis told Bay Area News Group on Wednesday that more results will be released Thursday afternoon.
Just shy of 16.4% of registered voters in the district, which includes Alameda, San Leandro and most of Oakland, voted in the special election, according to Alameda County. Every voter in the district was sent a mail-in ballot, and the county said 695 voters – or fewer than 0.3% of those registered – chose to vote in person.
Mia Bonta or Ramachandran will be up for reelection next November after serving what would've been the remainder of Rob Bonta's term.
