A suspected drunk driving accident has caused immense damage to a bridge in El Dorado County, stranding campers at a nearby resort.
A caravan is being organized to rescue the marooned travelers, but they will remain there for at least a few more days, officials said.
At 2 a.m. on Sunday, a reckless driver in a 2022 Toyota Tundra hurtled into a railing and support beam of a 106-year-old bridge in Coloma stretching over the American River, The Mercury News reported. The collision caused the bridge, known as Mt Murphy Bridge, to close due to "severe structural damage," which officials say may take months to repair.
With the bridge shut down, the only exit routes left are too small for RVs to exit out of, effectively stranding visitors of Coloma Resort. A caravan has been arranged on Oct. 4 to escort the RVs out of the resort, but for the meantime, they will have to make due with the resources they have.
One camper tweeted about her experience referencing the famous song Hotel California when she said, "check in anytime you like but you can never leave."
