Email flub allows ineligible Marin residents to sign up for COVID-19 vaccine

A Marin County health official said hundreds of people not eligible for COVID-19 vaccines signed up for the shots this week after a link to the county's appointment system was shared on social media.

The link was originally sent in an email to healthcare workers, who are eligible in Phase 1A of the state’s vaccine rollout. County officials told the Marin Independent Journal that one of the healthcare providers forwarded that link to someone else.

Officials closed the online PrepMod registration system Sunday and notified anyone who had signed that shots would only be given to healthcare workers.

"After that, there was something like 1,000 cancellations that occurred over a day, so it was really encouraging to see that people who had registered recognized that it wasn’t their time and canceled," Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis told the paper.

Marin's vaccine rollout is expected to move forward later this month or early next month for residents age 75 and older. Anyone working in the education, child care, emergency services, food and agriculture industries will also be eligible.
