SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – The recent storms battered the coast of Santa Cruz County, where major portions of the walkway and road were washed away along the iconic West Cliff Drive.

Now, emergency work is starting on Monday to shore it up.

200 tons of boulders are being added to the coast in portions where the storm hit the hardest – washing out walking pathways and the road itself.

The path is about three miles long and is popular with locals for walking and biking for its views of the ocean and Monterey Bay.

Residents in the area are hopeful that these improvements will prevent serious damage from happening in the event of another storm.

Many acknowledge the risks there are associated with building along the coast and living in houses by the shore, especially in this area that already had part of the walkway washed away in 2017.

They also hope that this popular stretch of coast will be restored to its original glory.

Monday’s work is considered an emergency stabilization project with the boulders being added to the coastline.

A more permanent solution is being sought for the future.

In the meantime, portions of West Cliff Drive will be one-way for traffic after Monday’s repairs.
