Firefighters contained two vegetation fires burning near East Bay freeways Tuesday evening.

The evening commute in Benicia turned into a huge mess when flames broke out along Interstate 680, at the intersection of Goodyear Rd. and Morrow Ln.  The fire raced up a hillside and came dangerously close to some cell phone towers.

CAL FIRE responded to the two-alarm fire shortly after 5:30 p.m. By 8:00 p.m., all lanes had opened up again on I-680.

Just before the incident, crews dealt with another fire along Interstate 80 in Rodeo.  A box truck caught on fire and sparked flames near Willow Avenue.

Firefighters halted the fire’s from spreading to homes by 4:20 and contained it around 20 minutes later.
