After alleged use of racial slurs by Tesla supervisors, a Black man was paid over $1 million by the electric car company.
Melvin Berry is a former employee of Tesla’s Fremont plant. He won a ruling this week that stated the company failed to stop his supervisors from calling him the “N-word” and ignored commonplace incidents of hate, according to court documents.
These incidents included swastikas graffitied in the factory and fellow employees referring to the Fremont plant as "the plantation" or "slaveship," Bloomberg reported.
Berry alleged that he was punished after confronting his boss about these instances, forced to work longer hours and push a heavier cart.
A Northern California arbitrator involved in the case stated that even one incident of a worker being called a racist slur constitutes severe harassment.
