A GoFundMe campaign for a DoorDash driver whose car was stolen in San Francisco with his two young children inside over the weekend has raised thousands of dollars and counting.
Jeffrey Fang had left the engine of his minivan running, with children ages one and four inside while delivering an order in the city’s Pacific Heights neighborhood Saturday night when he was carjacked.
That prompted an Amber Alert and a frantic search to locate the kids safely.
The children were found safe a few hours later inside the minivan in the Bayview. One suspect was taken into custody Tuesday by San Francisco Police. Another remains at-large.
Fang, whose only source of income is from gig work companies, said the kids were in the vehicle because he doesn't make enough money to hire a babysitter. That’s when a GoFundMe page was launched, hoping to raise $100,000 so the family could take some time off and recover from the traumatic incident.
As of Thursday afternoon, it's raised $148,000.
Journalist Joe Rodriguez, a friend of the Fang family, started the campaign.
"Wow," he wrote in a post to the campaign's page. "You folks are amazingly generous. This will certainly help the family take some needed time off - they have been through A LOT. I'm going to keep this up for a bit longer, since there is such an incredible outpouring of support."
