Green Apple Books is set to open a new location at San Francisco International Airport.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a lease for the beloved San Francisco bookstore at Harvey Milk Terminal 1.
Construction will begin in October 2023 and the store is expected to open the following March, Green Apple co-owner Pete Mulvihill told the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday.

Green Apple Books partnered with Hudson Group on the new location Hudson Group will own the airport location and be in charge of paying the minimum annual rent of $460,000, Mulvihill told the paper.

The original Green Apple location opened in 1967 on 506 Clement St. The small 750-square-foot space was only open in the evenings, and local legend Robin Williams was a frequent visitor of the store.

Three branches of the bookstore survived the COVID-19 pandemic – the Sunset store at 1231 Ninth Ave., the 2195 Filmore St. location and the original store on 506 Clement St. The Fiction and Music Annex location at 520 Clement St. moved into the original store earlier this month following a planned downsizing.

The new airport location will highlight local authors and other Green Apple staff favorites.
