SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Justice for Oakland Students Coalition has filed a lawsuit against the Oakland Unified School District, stating the plan to close schools violates the California Environmental Quality Act.

The group is built of parents and teachers trying to fight school consolidations that will place a burden on black and Hispanic communities, KPIX reported.
The lawsuit suggests the school closures will cause environmental damages like pollution and traffic because students who used to be able to walk or bike to school will have to drive or take the bus to a new school, the station said.
The district approved the consolidation of schools last month and the coalition said the district failed to analyze the plan under the Environmental Quality Act or failed to determine that the consolidation plan was exempt from it, the news station said.
"OUSD was required to engage in an environmental analysis before making its decision to shutter schools," Andrew Lah, an attorney for the coalition, said in a statement to KPIX. "But, rather than follow clear California law, OUSD embarked on a rushed and illegal process to shutter schools that largely ignored the students, families and communities it serves."
