Henry Cowell's Fall Creek hiking trails reopen after CZU wildfire burned 17 miles

Henry Cowell's Fall Creek hiking trails have reopened in the Santa Cruz Mountains after more than a year of being closed due to the CZU Lightning Complex fire.

Most of the hiking trails reopened Friday and many hikers are out exploring the area. Donna is a volunteer with the California State Parks, she remembers looking at the mountain trails after the fire burned.

"I had to just stop and turn around because it was just all the bulldozers because of the fire brights and it was complete devastation," Donna told KCBS Radio. "There was no tree no trails."

17 miles of trails were affected by the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire. Crews are still working on about two miles of the park, the Ridge and S-cape trails that are burned out.

"Yeah know this is new life, it will come back from the ashes, right," she said.

Several hikers were out enjoying the reopening of the trails.

"I think it is a very beautiful one, we drove all the way from San Jose and woke up early in the morning," a hiker said. "Totally worth it."
