Berkeley was the region's top city, rated as the country’s eighth best city to live, followed by San Francisco at 14, Sunnyvale at 16 and Santa Clara at 24. The Woodlands, Texas, Cambridge, Massachusetts and Naperville, Illinois, topped the list in that order.

Niche, the ranking and review company formerly known as "College Prowler," analyzed cities across the country based on 15 factors — including cost of living, public schools, higher education, crime and safety, and diversity — which were graded using a variety of metrics. Each factor was weighted and accumulated to result in an overall score and grade for each city.

Berkeley's score, which received an overall A+ grade, was highlighted by A+ grades for public schools, good for families, weather, health and fitness, nightlife, and outdoor activities. Its worst grade was a D- for, unsurprisingly, cost of living, and it received a C- for housing and C for crime and safety.

Similarly, the other highly ranked Bay Area cities, San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara each scored well in most categories except for cost of living, housing and crime and safety.
