Many San Francisco bars on Thursday will begin requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test in order to drink indoors, under a new San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance policy.

If you’ve been fully vaccinated, your physical, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-issued card will suffice. If you’ve lost your physical card or don’t want to bring it, you can use a digital version produced by the California Department of Public Health.

Here’s how to download yours in time to visit your favorite watering hole.

First, visit the state’s Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record website, where you’ll enter your first name, last name, birthday and – this is key – the cell phone number or email address you provided when you were vaccinated.

From there, the California Department of Public Health will text or email you a link to a QR code in order to access your digital vaccine card. On your phone, you can then use the QR code to link your digital vaccine card to your Apple Wallet or Google Pay accounts.

Like your physical card, the digital card contains your dose history. The digital card also includes a scannable QR code. That code, according to the public health department, can only be scanned by devices that are compliant with SMART Health Cards in order to protect user privacy.
