The fatal head-on collision occurred just after 8 p.m. on CA Highway 12 in Rio Vista between Summerset Drive and Church Road. A silver 2003 Honda Accord heading westbound lost control, over-corrected and veered into oncoming traffic, slamming head on into a white 2015 Cheverolet Suburban with seven people inside, according to a police press release on Thursday night.
All three Honda occupants, a 20-year-old Rancho Cordova man who was the driver, a 19-year-old Vacaville woman who the car was registered under, and another similarly aged passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were not released.
The Suburban occupants were a family of seven of Mexican nationals who were on a one-week vacation to the United States. One of the passengers, a woman named Laura Poiret, in her "early to mid 70s," died as a result of the crash, police said. The other six passengers were transported to three local hospitals and are in stable condition. Two of the injured people are an eight-year-old girl and 13 to 15-year-old girl.
Open containers of alcohol were found at the scene near the Honda, and a wine bottle was found near the Suburban, but investigators are waiting for toxicology reports before determining whether anyone was drunk.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Rio Vista Police Sgt. Terry Haley told KCBS Radio that the incident occurred after rush hour in a 50 mile per hour speed limit zone, when traffic is usually light and where speeding violations often occur.
"Highway 12 is very dangerous. That is where the majority of our traffic collisions occur," Haley said. "Highway 12 is actually designated by the state from Stockton to Fairfield as a double fine zone because of the nature of accidents that occur there so it is a well known dangerous Highway."
Highway 12 was shut down in both directions due to the crash and reopened just before 1 a.m.
