As the deadline for city employees to be vaccinated nears, unvaccinated San Francisco police are applying for religious exemption.
Nearly 200 San Francisco Police Department staff members have requested for a religious exemption from the city’s COVID-19 vaccination policy, which requires that all San Francisco employees who work in high-risk settings to be vaccinated by Oct. 13, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Of the 2,835 police department employees, 366 are unvaccinated and 193 want religious exemption. This is the highest number of exemption requests from any city department.
The Department of Human Resources has tentatively approved 157 officers to be exempt from the vaccination mandate while the rest are still under review, the newspaper said. However, even if waivers are fully accepted, officers may still be let go from their jobs as they could put themselves or the community at risk.
Across the Bay Area, protests are being held Friday evening as residents stand in opposition of COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
