Residents accused an illegal fireworks show of igniting a vegetation fire Saturday night in an unincorporated area outside a Livermore neighborhood that was devastated by the SCU Lightning Complex fire last year, according to a report from KTVU.
Fire crews put out the blaze and contained it to a quarter of an acre, the news outlet said.
The fireworks were part of a large sideshow.
The area along Del Valle Rd. and the end of Mendenhall Rd. is notorious for sideshows and neighbors told KTVU that Saturday was the worst such event.
"What we found was there was an organized car sideshow of more than 100 cars," resident Bob Stear told the network. "They were spinning donuts in the road, they were drinking, they were lighting off fireworks."
Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene and told cars to leave, though Stear said nobody was arrested or cited. He called on more officers to regularly patrol the area.
The area was ravaged by last year’s SCU Lightning Complex fires, which burned a total of almost 400,00 acres, including some of the neighbors’ homes. According to Stear, the neighborhood is located in a “state-designated wildfire zone” and is very susceptible to fires.
KTVU reports that homeowners may ask the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to close the road to non-residents at night.
