SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) –  Daly City leaders on Friday presented acclaimed comedian Jo Koy with a key to the city as a gesture of appreciation for his contributions to the Filipino American community ahead of the release of his new Daly City-based film "Easter Sunday."

The movie is set to be the first major studio film centered around a Filipino American family.

Koy, who stars in the film, was in the Bay Area this week promoting the movie, which is set in Daly City, home one of the largest Filipino populations in the U.S.

"The significance of the key is from your sheer talent to make people laugh, and heal people. Laughter is healing," Daly City Mayor Roderick Daus-Magbual said during the ceremony. "The key represents opening doors. Literally bringing others along with you."

The plaque that the key came on was inscribed with a message that read, "The city of Daly City presents the key to the city to Jo Koy for the film Easter Sunday and his love and support of the Daly City community."

"We want to teach this generation about the struggle our ancestors went through for us so that we can live this life," Koy said after receiving the key.

"The door is open," he continued. "Let’s just continue keeping it open and help other people go through that door. Let's not try to bring it back and close it on us, let's keep the door open."

Koy on Thursday attended the worldwide premiere of the film, which was held at Century 20 in Daly City, alongside local Filipino American celebrities like rappers Bambu and Ruby Ibarra. In addition, popular Bay Area Filipino restaurants the Sarap Shop and Lumpia Time provided catering at the event.

Easter Sunday, a film from Dreamworks and Universal Studios and produced by Steven Spielberg, will be released in theaters nationwide on August 5. Along with Koy, it stars Lydia Gaston, Brandon Wardell, Eva Noblezada, Eugene Cordero, Rodney To and Tiffany Haddish.
