KATHY FANG, House of Nanking, San Francisco

The House of Nanking is without doubt San Francisco’s most beloved Chinese restaurant and the story of this family run business is being told in a new book by Chef Kathy Fang, daughter of founders Lily and Peter Fang.

For almost four decades (since 1998), House of Nanking with Chef Peter at the helm and wife Lily working the floor has been the spot to go for modern Chinese cuisine in San Francisco. It’s a popular spot with locals, visitors and some celebrities too.

“We are known on the comedy circuit. We had Kathy Griffin in who told us comedians share their favorite eating spots and House of Nanking is on that food list for comics. That’s cool,” says Chef Fang.

Chef Kathy Fang runs her own restaurant Fang’s (since 2009). The unstoppable Chef also made her mark on TV show Chopped and the family was featured in their own show on Food Network, Chef Dynasty - House of Fang.

The House of Nanking book is more than a cookbook, it’s a personal love letter not only to her parents but to all immigrants who came to San Francisco to fulfill a dream.

“The resilience of our city is reflected in those people here and the businesses they launched,” says Fang.

Pick up your copy of the House of Nanking book at local bookstores including Book Passage in the SF Ferry Building and Omnivore Books in Noe Valley.
