FOODIE PICK: CALABASH, OAKLAND
There are many reasons to love Calabash on Valdez Street in Oakland. It’s a bar, restaurant and international grocery store too. The cuisine at Calabash reflects the rich diversity of “the town” - Afro-Caribbean meets Northern Iranian. I had the tasty Kingston Oxtail Stew with plantains and jasmine rice. It was the hug of love in a bowl that I needed this past week. The menu here has one thing at its core, love. Calabash is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
