Lottery tickets stolen in East Bay liquor store burglary

Multiple suspects used a pickup truck to smash into an East Bay liquor store early Monday morning, and appeared to be after the store’s lottery tickets that the owners said are probably worth no more than the paper they're printed on.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday at the Meadow Square Liquor store.

Steve O'Brien works the overnight shift at the store and said one of the two male suspects threatened him when he tried to call 9-1-1 from outside the store.  However, O’Brien said the thieves did not manage to make it out with much.

“They took the top of the cash register, not the cash drawer, and the display case with the lottery tickets that they can’t use.” O’Brien said. “That’s all they got, not a drop of booze.”

O'Brien said every scratcher has a number which will now come back as stolen if anyone tries to redeem them.

“Desperate times create desperate people, I guess, I don’t know,” O’Brien said. “They weren’t very good at it, that’s for sure.”

Fremont Police recovered the suspects' truck, which was stolen out of Hayward. The suspects remained at large as of late Monday morning.
