One woman was found dead and a man was hospitalized with major injuries after a suspected drunk driver rammed into their car late Saturday night in Cupertino, authorities said.
Officers responded to reports of a crash shortly after 11 p.m. on northbound Interstate Highway 280 south of Wolfe Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. The wreck forced authorities to close the off-ramp for more than four hours.
The two cars were found veered off the road and one of them, a Nissan Ultima, had smashed into a tree.
The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene while the male driver was immediately hospitalized with major injuries.
Nobody was found in the other car, a Nissan Sentra, which had front-end damage.
The driver was located nearby, medically cleared and booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of drunk driving. The CHP said he had two other DUI convictions.
