A motorcyclist attempted to drown an 18-year veteran of the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday afternoon after blowing through a routine traffic stop.

A little before 1 p.m. on Thursday a Yuba County deputy tried to stop Thomas Giboney, 30, of Linda, while riding his motorcycle. Giboney instead blew through the stop, riding eastbound on North Beale Rd. He was pursued, and eventually crashed the motorcycle on Alberta Ave.

As deputies attempted to detain him, he started aggressively resisting, going so far as drag a Sheriff Sergeant into a flooded ditch by the road and hold them underwater.

Other deputies were able to arrest Giboney and save the sergeant.

The sergeant was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment for minor injuries, including water aspiration and a sprained ankle. They have not been identified by the Yuba County Sheriff’s department, but they did state that the sergeant was released from the hospital Thursday night.

Giboney was also taken to the hospital and evaluated before being released Thursday night. He is now being held at Yuba County Jail with a bail set for $1.125 million.

He has been charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, assault of a peace officer, and felony evading.
