A 47-year-old Napa man shot by a Napa County Sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop Monday night has died.

Sheriff's officials said Juan Garcia died Tuesday night at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa after being shot at the traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Monday near Kaiser Rd. and State Highway 221.

The Sheriff's Department said that after Garcia was pulled over, he got out of his vehicle and walked toward the deputy with a hand tucked behind his back. The deputy shot Garcia after they said he ignored instructions to show his hand and got within close range.

It was later determined Garcia was not holding anything.

According to the Press-Democrat, officers from the Napa Police Department arrived a short time later, and gave Garcia CPR and other first aid before he was taken to the hospital.

It's not clear why Garcia was stopped or how many times he was shot.

The deputy that shot Garcia has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation. The sheriff's office has not identified the deputy who shot Garcia, but tweeted the deputy was wearing a body camera and expect that footage will be released next week.
