Man dies after boat catches fire near Berkeley Marina

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A man has died after his boat caught fire in the water near the Berkeley Marina early Wednesday morning, police announced in a release.

Authorities at 12:38 a.m. responded to a report of a boat on fire in the water near Marina Boulevard at the Virginia Street extension road, just east of the Double Tree Hotel.

Prior to emergency personnel arriving, person or persons already on the scene extracted a male victim from the water and applied CPR. Berkeley Fire Department officials took over lifesaving efforts when they arrived and extinguished the fire.

The man was transported to a local trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

An investigation by the CAL FIRE Office of the State Fire Marshal Arson and Bomb Unit and Alameda County Coroner's Office is ongoing.

No other information was released.
