A man apparently trying to avoid a DUI arrest was struck and killed on Highway 101 overnight in Burlingame.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident happened after 10 p.m. Tuesday night. Spokesman Art Montiel told KCBS that an officer investigating a report of a disabled vehicle southbound on the Highway 101 shoulder near Broadway determined that the man was under the influence.
When advised that he was being taken into custody, Montiel said the suspect ran across all southbound lanes of the highway, attempting to flee.
"Then as he was trying to jump onto the northbound lanes, he was struck by a coming San Mateo County Sheriff’s vehicle who was traveling in the number one (fast) lane," he said.
The deputy’s SUV hit and killed the man instantly.
Most of the northbound lanes were closed overnight for an investigation. They were reopened shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday.
The identity of the man has not yet been released.
