An estimated 11,000 Marin County residents aged 75 and older are eligible to receive a booster shot of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, and officials say they are able to provide up to 1,000 shots per day at a recently opened booster clinic.

Some residents started receiving their third dose of the vaccine at a county-sponsored clinic at the east entrance of San Rafael's Northgate Mall on Wednesday.

"Today, we're opening our doors for the first time, and we're specifically looking to target those older adults, 75 and older," Marin County spokesperson Laine Hendricks told KCBS Radio. "Because we recognize they are at highest risk at adverse outcome should they contract COVID-19."

Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County Public Health Officer, said the county established the clinic in order to protect its "most vulnerable residents." Francine, a 77-year-old woman who spoke with KCBS Radio on Wednesday, is among them.

"I'm old, I have to have it and I hope I don't get (COVID-19)," she said.

So, too, is Virginia, an 81-year-old with an underlying medical condition.

"It is important to have the shot," she said, noting she wanted to receive her booster "as soon as possible."

The Northgate Mall clinic will run through Saturday, with appointments encouraged and walk-ins welcome between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
beginning Thursday.
