Marin County residents began lining up in their vehicles at a free recycled water station in San Rafael on Wednesday.

The water station located across from the Marin County Civic Center was opened on Aug. 18, a few months after Marin Water advised customers to reduce daily usage by 40%.

"I’ve got plants along the hillside that I’m trying to keep together," a man filling up a 150 gallon tank explained to KCBS Radio. "I didn’t want them to die."

The station is provided by the Marin Municipal Water District and is available to anyone in Marin County from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

To qualify to use the water, residents must fill out an application.

"They can come as many times as they want a day," a water agency spokesman told KCBS Radio. "They can take as many loads as they want, within the confines of 10 to 300 gallons."

The water is for irrigation purposes only, as tertiary-treated water is not approved for drinking or bathing.

"This might be the new normal if you want to keep your plants alive," a Marin resident said.
