It's a race against time for water managers in southern and central Marin County to build a pipeline across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.
The bulk of Marin County's water comes from seven modest reservoirs, which are now very low, and are getting lower every day. To alleviate this pending crisis, the goal is to design and build a seven-mile-long bridge pipeline by next summer.
The water would be transferred from the Central Valley via several other existing pipelines.
The coming months are crucial in determining the desperation for the pipeline, according to Emma Detwiler, the communications and public affairs manager for Marin Municipal Water District.
"If there is absolutely no rain this winter and our conservation levels don't meet some of the goals that we have set. That is when we anticipate that our water supplies would be critically low and this water transfer would be required," said Detwiler.
The current plan is a bit aggressive, Detwiler admitted. It's unclear if it can be built in time.
And if built, the pipeline would only provide a portion of Marin's needs.
