Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after living through a deadly pandemic for a year is already a joyous occasion for many.

At a mass vaccination site at San Francisco's Moscone Center, administrators are building on the hopeful mood with a playlist full of songs that celebrate better times ahead, creating an audible treat for people who come in to get inoculated.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s culture critic Peter Hartlaub reported that the playlist includes upbeat classics like "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers, "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles and "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.

So how did this playlist come together?

"It was a ride," Hartlaub told KCBS Radio's Patti Reising and Jeff Bell. "It started just with the staff when no people were around, just to get their day going. They’re playing upbeat songs and then they’re like, ‘hey let’s play this for the people coming in too,’ and people love it. It’s just such a good vibe."

Hartlaub said that Kaiser nurses and other staff members at the vaccination center initially created the playlist themselves, made up of their favorite songs.

"It was really an organic thing," he added.

Eventually, an event company with the Moscone Center stepped in to help flesh out the playlist and make it less repetitive.

Hartlaub said the response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive.

"Universally are saying that this Moscone Center is like Disneyland for vaccination, it’s just really orderly and good vibes," he said.

"Coming out of this, we need all the joy we can get."
