Early Tuesday morning, the sinkhole swallowed an SUV. KCBS Radio reporter Matt Bigler said it was so large it could have swallowed two Volkswagens.

The hole started to open at 1:30 a.m. on the corner of Abbott Avenue and Castle Street in Daly City. Lucita Cortez told KCBS Radio she woke up to the sound of rushing water. "I said oh no. I came out, I rushed in here, I watched the water flowing all over the place," she said. "I called the police right away."

Authorities arrived on the scene, but the hole continued to grow reaching 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

"Unfortunately there was a vehicle right here that then got undermined and fell into a sinkhole," Joshua Cosgrove, acting director with the Daly City Water and Wastewater Resources Department, explained.

Cosgrove said the sinkhole was likely created by last weekend's major storm that caused flooding across the Bay Area. A second atmospheric river is set to hit the region on Wednesday, prompting the department to pre-stage crews and materials to respond to more holes and more flooding. "Materials ready to make repairs on infrastructure and then just getting everybody ready and in the mode of having to deal with whatever emergencies come up," Cosgrove said.

The SUV has been pulled out of the hole and towed. The owner was concerned about what would become of his vehicle as most of the engine was submerged in water. Neighbors are concerned that the sinkhole could get bigger over the next couple of days if it gets filled with water after the upcoming storm.

A second sinkhole opened in front of the Oakland Zoo on Sunday, blocking the entrance. The zoo has been closed until at least Jan. 17 as crews repair the 10 foot wide by 10 foot deep hole.
