The president of a Menlo Park school board has resigned after his wife posted racist tweets about Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Jon Venverloh resigned from his post as the President of the Los Lomitas Elementary School District over the weekend after a public outcry.
It started when his wife Mehridith Philips Venverloh tweeted in response to a post about Harris' qualifications, "all she needs to be qualified is a black ****! No brain needed!" She included a crude term for female genitalia in the post.
Screenshots of the tweet and other vulgar posts about Harris were shared on social media as dozens of parents called for Venverloh to resign.
Although the former Google executive called his wife's comments "reprehensible," he acknowledged that his presence on the board would be a distraction and stepped down. Venverloh had two years left in his term.
His wife - a supporter of President Trump - has since apologized for her posts, saying she was ashamed and wrote the post in a "moment of disappointment." Phillips Venverloh also said that she had recently started weaning herself off of medication for a debilitating neurological disease.
