The Milpitas Police Department has concluded that a man shot himself Saturday night at the Great Mall, causing panic and prompting a lockdown.

Police said they arrived at the mall at about 5:16 p.m. and found a 22-year-old man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Paramedics took the San Francisco resident to a local hospital, and police asked all store employees and shoppers to shelter-in-place while they searched the mall for suspects and victims.

Officials said further investigation revealed that the man had shot himself.

Brian, who works at a shoe store, said he first saw people running "like crazy" towards his store, and then heard a loud noise. He ushered them inside to shelter-in-place, as was recommended by officials.

Brian said they sheltered-in-place for about 30 minutes before they were led outside by police.

Many of those in the parking lot told KCBS Radio they were waiting to get the green-light to head back inside to retrieve their belongings.

The mood outside the mall remained calm Saturday night, as police continued to clear stores.

Police said two unrelated medical emergencies happened at the time of the mall search and evacuation, and both of those individuals were transported to local hospitals by paramedics.

The mall search concluded at 9:26 p.m., according to the MPD.

No further information has been released about the San Francisco man's condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
