SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – East Bay animal shelters are trying to find a new forever home for more than 50 Chihuahuas that were rescued from a home in North Livermore last month.

According to a Facebook post by the Livermore Police Department last week, officers responded to a call for service at the home and as soon as the front door was opened, they knew something was wrong.

"They estimated at least 20 dogs in the house," said 25-year veteran Animal Services Officer Kathy Holmes, with Livermore Police. "They said the smell was terrible and horrible."

In an extreme case of animal hoarding, 51 small dogs were at the home, many in cages without food or water. But authorities quickly got to work rescuing the pups.

"There was an assembly line of processing all these dogs and getting them situated," said Holmes. "It was quite an undertaking."

The dogs were taken nearby to the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin.

Holmes, along with Community Service Specialist Joanna Johnson and Pleasanton Police’s Animal Services Officer Frankie Ayers, determined the owner was unable to care for them.

When they arrived, the dogs were vaccinated, given some pampering and given clean cages.

The dogs have since been made available for adoption at several East Bay shelters, accordion to the post, 15 at Oakland Animal Services, 12 at Dublin SPCA, around 10 at Valley Humane Society and 12 dogs at the East County Animal Shelter.

The case is currently being investigated by the District Attorney's Office.
