According to a post on the department's Facebook page, a mountain lion was reportedly running around a shopping center near the area of Sand Canyon and Irvine Center Drive.
"We are not lion, we had a purr-ty scary situation on our paws today," said the post. "As our claw-enforcement officers arrived, the lion ran towards the shopping center nearly causing a fur-enzy as it is uncommon for a mountain lion to be seen in Irvine."
Officers were able to chase the big cat into a different area, and gave it some space while they gathered more resources.
With the aid of the department's Animal Services Officers, the lion was safely sedated and captured.
The 2-year-old male cat was taken to a nearby animal care center for evaluation and will be released soon.
