The state is bringing in heavy security to the Sacramento Capitol as the nation gears up for the Presidential inauguration.
State Senator Mike McGuire told KCBS Radio that the need for extra security is “shameful.”
“This is unprecedented,” he said. “Never before have we seen in modern history 1,000 national guard members, hundreds of California highway patrol officers, deployed to be able to protect the heart of our state democracy in Sacramento.” He emphasized, “we have to take the temperature down.”
The state did not issue a permit that was requested by 1,000-3,000 supporters of President Trump hoping to protest at the capitol this coming Sunday, but the so-called “let freedom ring” protestors are expected to attend anyway.
The state has “greatly increased the security,” said Senator McGuire, in addition to deploying the national guard.
Senator McGuire is hoping that calmer heads prevail this week.
